SUPERMAN: HALL OF HEROES
OPENING:
We open with melancholy trumpet music quietly playing
in the background as images of all the past Superman incarnations in film,
books, comics and television appear. As the images wind up the music gets
louder and leads into the familiar Superman theme from Superman the movie as
the S shield appears before us.
The S shield vanishes and the familiar theme music
continues to play while the credits appear as images depicting Superman’s
journey to earth as a baby flash before us. We see his parents placing him in
the rocket and then the rocket being launched. We continue to watch as the rocket
speeds away from Krypton as the planet is destroyed. The rocket enters the
solar system and smashing through earth’s atmosphere crashes to the ground in
Smallville where baby Kal-El is found by Johnathan and Martha Kent. We then
jump forward to see Clark as a teenager running at super speed across a field
and jumping into the air to fly for the first time. We fade from Clark’s look
of astonishment as he soars through the air to a scene in Metropolis ten years
later. We watch as Clark Kent steps off a bus and walks into the Daily Planet
building for the first time. We are in Perry White’s office watching as Perry
introduces Clark and Lois to each other and see Clark look at Lois in puzzled
recognition as his soul recognizes his soulmate. We skip ahead to see
Superman’s dazzling entrance as wearing the familiar costume he stops a plane
from crashing and is confronted by Lois Lane. As the theme music begins to wrap
up we see images of Lois and Clark dancing, of Superman flying with Lois, of
Clark taking off his glasses and pulling open his shirt to reveal his secret
identity to a shocked Lois and of Lois and Clarks wedding. As the music rolls
to an end we fade from a scene of Lois and Clark in a passionate embrace on
their wedding night to a forbidding image of Lex Luthor as ominous music plays
and the screen fades to black.
SCENE 1:
Two alien craft enter the solar system one fleeing the
other. The pursuing craft(Craft1) fires on the other(Craft2) and as Craft2
crashes into Earth's atmosphere and burns up Craft1 turns and leaves the solar
system.
SCENE 2:
On duty in the Justice League HQ(JLHQ) orbiting the
Earth J'onn J'onnz the Martian Manhunter witnesses the firefight and as Craft2
plunges into Earth's atmosphere he rushes to a control panel and hastily begins
flicking switches. As Craft2 erupts in flame a humming noise fills the room and
at it's centre a glowing column of light appears above a raised dais that
slowly fades into a figure who collapses onto the floor. There is still an
afterglow of light and we cannot make out the figure clearly.
SCENE 3:
In the LexCorp penthouse Lex Luthor is sitting at his
desk listening to a technician who stands in froint of him fidgeting nervously.
Technician: Your orbital spy. . er. . surveillance satellites
detected two alien spacecraft entering the solar system just over twenty
minutes ago.
Luthor: Where
are they now?
Technician: Well
that's the thing. . .
Luthor:
(impatient) What
is is? Spit it out fool.
Technician: Sorry sir. The thing is one of the
spacecraft fired upon the other. The one that was fired upon crashed into
Earth's atmosphere and burnt up on re-entry and after that the other ship left.
I've transferred the footage recorded of the event to your computer.
The technician continues to fidget as Lex brings up
the up the footage on his computer and watches the recording his eyes narrowed
in interest.
Luthor: Can
any of the wreckage from the crashed spacecraft be recovered?
Technician: The alien ship was completely destroyed
on re-entry. There's nothing left to recover. Sorry sir.
Luthor glowers at the technician. His simpering
apologetic attitude annoys Lex. In the background the footage of the event is
continuing to play in a recorded loop on Luthor's computer. Lex returns his attention
to the footage and something catches his eye. He pauses the playback and cycles
back several frames. He points to the screen.
Luthor: What's
this?
Nervously the technician leans forward and looks at what
Lex is pointing at. It is a glowing white beam of energy streaming away from
the craft just before it explodes.
Technician: It seems to be a matter stream from a
teleportation device originating from a remote location.
Luthor:
(muses) So
whatever lifeforms were on board that ship could have survived.
Luthor:
(to technician) Where
did the teleportation signal originate from?
Technician:
(anxious) If
I might have the use of your computer for a moment sir I could find out.
Luthor: Get
on with it.
The technician comes around the desk leans forward and
begins typing at Lex's computer. A minute later he stands up and steps back from the desk.
Luthor: Well?
Technician: The signal came from the Justice League
headquarters in orbit around the Earth.
Lex sits thinking for a moment then grins in a
predatory manner and stands wrapping his arm around the technicians shoulder.
The technician glances at Lex's arm nervously wondering what is going on.
Luthor walks the technician towards the elevator.
Luthor: Does
anyone else know about this?
Technician: Just me sir. I was the duty technician
for the surveillance system when the incident occurred.
Luthor: Good.
Good. You see I don't want anybody else but me to know about this.
Technician: You can count on me not to tell anyone
sir. I came straight to you as soon as I found out.
They are at the elevator.
Luthor: I know I can count on you but you
see I don't want anyone else knowing about this but me. Not even you.
The technicians eyes widen. Luthor presses a hidden
button and the elevator doors open revealing an open shaft. The technician is
facing Luthor and does not see this.
Luthor: One more thing. Are there any other
records of this than those on my computer?
Technician:
(confused) No
sir. I transferred the files and logs directly to your computer.
Luthor: Thankyou.
Luthor pushes the technician into the empty shaft and
his fading screams are cut off as the elevator doors close. Smiling ominously
Luthor returns to his desk and watches the footage of the alien spacecfraft
once more.
SCENE 4:
Clark and Lois are in a Metropolis City Park beside a
calm lake enjoying a romantic picnic. As they sip from wine glasses enjoying a
companionable silence a group of children run laughing and screaming into the
lake splashing water onto the carefully laid out picnic. Clark looks at the
ruined food startled then looking at Lois shrugs and grins sheepishly.
Clark: I
guess we shouldn't have set up so close to the lake.
Lois:
(barely
restraining
her mirth) I
guess not.
They are distracted as a Luthor helicopter flies
overhead and a brief frown flickers across Clark's face. Lois notices.
Lois: What
is it?
Clark: It's
Luthor. He's up to something. Something big.
Lois: What?
Clark:
(frustrated) I wish I knew. Every time I think I'm
getting close it turns out to be a red herring. Luthor's lines all his
facilties with lead so I can't keep an eye on what he's doing. Whatever he up
to he's been plannig it a long time. He's made sure I won't be able to find out
what it is until it's too late.
Lois smiles reassuringly.
Lois: Sounds like a job for Lois
& Clark number one investigative journalist team in the world.
Clark smiles wanly.
Clark: Maybe but I get the feeling that
whatever Luthor is up to it's bad and I just don't know if I'll be able to stop
him.
Lois: Then
we'll stop him together.
Clark smiles genuinely.
Clark: Has
anyone ever told you you're a great listener?
Lois:
(deadpan) It
comes with the job.
They move together on the picnic blanket in a
passionate embrace. Lois’ beeper goes off and they break apart reluctantly.
Rolling over Lois picks up her beeper and squints at the display.
Lois: It's
Perry. He wants us back at the Planet. Yesterday.
Clark: I
thought we agreed to turn our beepers off.
Lois:
(miffed) You might have but I sure as hell
didn't. You're always on call for your job why shouldn't I be on call for mine?
Clark looks away distracted.
Clark:
(guiltily) Speaking
of which. . .
Lois arches her eyebrows dangerously.
Clark: Sorry
hon.
Lois:
(resignedly) What
do you want me to tell Perry?
Clark: Tell
him I'm out covering Superman.
Lois gives Clark a long look.
Clark:
(defensively) Well
it's almost the truth.
Lois: Uh-huh. Fine. Have it your way.
I don't know why Perry doesn't fire you. You're almost never at work.
(beat)
Clark: probably because I'm the second
best reporter he's ever had and the only other person besides you who has the
inside scoop on Superman.
Lois: Literally.
(beat)
Lois: Second
best?
Clark:
(grinning) Next
to Jimmy.
Lois punches Clark who feigns injury. They smile at
each other.
Lois: Hadn't
you better do your thing?
Clark:
(reluctant) I
suppose so.
Neither of them want to leave. Tearing himself away
Clark looks around then steps behind some bushes. A gust of wind comes from
nowhere shaking the bushes and a figure steps out. We see red leather boots
coming up to a quarter below knee height. As we look up we see loose fitting
trousers made of a shiny blue material emerging from the tops of the boots.
Further up we see that the trousers are done up with a belt made of solid
polished and shining gold. The belt buckle is oval shaped with a familiar
S-symbol etched into it's surface. Above the belt we see that the figure is
wearing a dark blue form-fitting skivvy tucked in it is the same colour as the
trousers. Held in place by diagonal red leather straps that go over the
shoulders and are attached to to the belt is the familiar S-shield centred over
the figures chest. The symbol is gold and a dark shining red that reflects the
light in the same manner as the gold. We see the figure is wearing a leather
jacket (similar in style to Neo's from the Matrix) that is a dark-red colour
the same as the straps that hold the S-shield in place. The coat is open and
when blown back reveals the whole S-shield but partially overlaps the edges of
the shield when hanging. Finally we see the figure in full and see that he is
wearing red-tinted glasses (like Cyclop's from X-Men the Movie). Enter Superman
new millenium style.
Lois:
(jaw dropped) What's
this?
Superman: I
thought it was time for a change it being anew millenium and all that.
(grinning
Tights are so eighties. I had mom
whip this up for me last week. What do
sheepishly) you think?
Lois: It's.
. .it's. . .it's different.
(jaw still
dropped)
Superman spins around and we see that an outline of
the S-symbol is emblazoned in gold on the back of his jacket.
Superman: You
don't like it?
(disappointed)
Lois: No no. It's not that. I suppose
I just got used to seeing you in those daggy tights.
Superman: Daggy!
(hurt)
Lois: Sorry
hon but it's the truth.
Superman looks around then seeing they are alone for
the moment he moves closer to Lois cups her chin and kisses her passionately
before once more breaking away.
Superman: Marrying
you was the best thing I ever did. See you tonight babe.
Lois: Babe!
(splutters)
Superman: It's
the new cool me. Bye.
(grins)
Lois watches as Superman flies off in a blur of red
and blue then grabs her beeper which has started beeping again.
Lois:
(to her
beeper) Yes
yes. I'm coming. Keep your pants on.
SCENE 5:
Wee see the JLHQ in orbiting from a viewpoint above th
Earth. The stars glitter in the background and the sun can be seen rising over
the horizon. A streak of red strikes out from the Earth’s atmosphere and
disappears into the JLHQ. A second later the trail or red disappears.
Fade to:
SCENE 6:
FOLLOWING: J’onn and Superman are walking along a
corridor in the JLHQ talking.
J’onn: .
. . As soon as I realised what was happening I activated the teleporter.
Superman: Do
you know what the fight was about?
J’onn: No. The alien still hasn’t
regained consciousness since he came on board. He’s in the med bay right now
recovering. The computers are monitoring and will alert me if he regains
consciousness.
Superman: Do we know anything about him?
J’onn: That’s the reason I called you up
here. As soon as he arrived I ran a med-scan and apart from a few
inconsistencies as near as the med-computer can tell he’s Kryptonian.
Superman
stops and stare at J’onn in shock.
Superman:
Kryptonian? Are you sure?
J’onn: Not entirely. As I said there were
some genetic inconsistencies but they were analagous to the differences between
neanderthals and humans.
Superman: You mean he’s an evolutionary off-shoot
of the Kryptonian race?
J’onn: It is more as if he is what the
Kryptonian species could have evolved into but didn’t – a path not taken.
Superman
frowns in thought.
Superman: According to what I know of Krypton and
it’s history there was only one species of Kryptonian so where did he come
from? You’re certain he’s not a failed attempt at cloning me?
J’onn: Yes and nor is he a failed attempt at cloning another Kryptonian. Of that I am certain.
Superman: Then who is he?
Before
J’onn can answer alarms ring shattering the peaceful silence.
J’onn: The alien has regained
consciousness. Perhaps now we will find out some answers.
The
two run off down the corridor towars the med-bay as
Superman: Perhaps.
SCENE
6:
A man human in appearance lies restrained on a hospital bed in the med-bay. He is conscious and staring around wildly as he struggles against his bonds. The doors to the med-bay open and J’onn and Superman rush in. The man seeing them stops struggling and looks at Superman in shock. He says something in an alien language and Superman looks puzzled.
Superman: His language almost sounds Kryptonian.
Can you establish contact with him?
J’onn: Perhaps.
J’onn moves over to the man who continues to struggle
in his bonds and is talking frantically in an alien language.
J’onn: Do
not be alarmed.
J’onn places his hand on the struggling man’s head and
closes his eyes in concentration. A moment later he opens his eyes which glow
momentarily before returning to normal and turns to address Superman. The
restrained man looks up at J’onn eyes wide in shock from the brief mental
contact.
J’onn: He comes from a world a long way
away. He is on a mission of some kind but I was unable to determine what it
was. I will need a few days to establish a better rapport with him and instruct
him in our language.
Superman: Well until we can communicate I’m not
much use to you here.
J’onn: Yes. Nevertheless I thought you
would like to know about our guest.
Superman: You were right. (pause) Lois is
expecting me for dinner tonight. If you need me you know where to find me.
J’onn: I will contact you as soon as communications
are established.
Superman: Thanks.
With that Superman is gone in a flash of red leaving J’onn and their alien guest. The guest blinks in astonishment at Superman’s departure. J’onn addresses the empty air where Superman stood.
J’onn: Nice
outfit.
(dryly)
SCENE 7:
The balcony of Lois and Clark’s apartment. Night time.
A table is on the balcony laid out with candles and a romantic dinner for two.
Lois stands on the balcony in a sleek evening dress looking out over the
Metropolis skyline her hands on the railing. A gentle breeze blows her hair
back and causes he dress to flutter gently around her. A sudden huge gust of
wind leaves Lois’ hair in a tangled mess as a streak of red flashes by
Lois and into the apartment. Clark
steps out dressed in a dinner suit his hair immaculate. He looks at Lois’
dishevelled appearance in surprise while she simply glares at him as she
attempts to straighten her hair.
Clark: What
happened to your hair?
Lois: What
do you think?
(frostily)
Clark: Was
that me? Sorry.
Clark grins as Lois looks over at the dinner table and
quickly wipes it off as she looks back at him sharply.
Lois: At
least you didn’t ruin the dinner.
She moves to sit down and Clark hastens to pull out
her chair.
Clark: Allow
me.
Lois: Thankyou.
(still frosty)
Clark pulls the wine bottle out of the ice and pops
the cork.
Clark: Some
wine Madame?
Lois nods and he pours her a glass before pouring
himself one and taking a seat opposite her.
Clark: This is a great spread. How’d you
find the time to do it? I can move faster than a speeding bullet and I never
seem to be able to find the time to prepare a proper meal.
Lois
grins the ice broken.
Lois: I’m a woman.
Clark: Aah. . .
(still
looking
mystified)
Lois
grins at him and lifts the cover off their meal. Beef and Bourguinon.
Clark: My favourite.
Lois: I thought you’d like it.
Clark: So what did Perry want?
Lois goes quiet. Clark tucks heartily into his meal and looks up quizzically when Lois doesn’t answer.
Clark: Lois?
Lois: He
wants me to investigate Luthor and find out what he’s been up to.
Clark: Why
the silent treatment?
Lois: Apparently Luthor has been
having highlevel meetings with various global officials at a men’s only club.
Perry wants me to infiltrate the club and find out what the meetings are about.
Clark: How does he expect you to get in?
Why didn’t he ask me?
Lois: He said he would have asked you
but you’re never around. The club has no female employees and women aren’t allowed
in the door except –
Clark: Except what?
Lois: According to Perry’s sources
the club often provdes female strippers for it’s clientele of an evening. Perry
wants me to go in as one.
Clark has been quietly sipping his wine but at Lois last statement he splutters and sprays a shower of wine over Lois’ dress. Lois shrieks and leaps out of her chair.
Lois: My
dress it’s ruined.
Clark: What
did you say?
Lois is distractedly examining her ruined evening
dress.
Lois: Say?
Clark: To
Perry.
Lois is still distracted by her dress.
Lois: About
what?
Clark: About
your. . .assignment.
Lois looks up.
Lois: I
said I’d think about it.
(beat)
Clark blinks in disbelief.
Clark: No!
Lois looks up puzzled.
Lois: No?
Clark: No. You’re not doing it. I’m not
having my wife prance around naked in front of a group of strange lecherous
men.
Lois: Excuse me?
(extreme
frost)
Clark: You heard me.
(defensively)
Lois
glares at Clark and he fidgets nervously. He’s done it now.
Lois: As it happens I was planning on
telling Perry tomorrow that I wouldn’t do it but now I’m not so sure.
Clark: But Lois you can’t –
Lois: Can’t I? I think we need to
have a discussion about what I can and
can’t do but I’m tired. I’m going to bed – alone.
Clark
stands alone and dejected on the balcony as Lois walks into their apartment.
SCENE
8:
The next morning. Sunlight streams in the window of the couple’s apartment and we see Clark tossing and turning on the living room couch trying to get comfortable while he sleeps. We see the closed door to the bedroom open as Lois steps out in her pajamas and stretches and yawns. Her yawning wakes Clark who sits up and blinks sleepily.
Lois: Morning
sleepyhead.
Clark: Lois.
. .about last night –
Lois: Forget
it.
Clark: But
–
Lois: Clark.
I don’t want another argument right now ok?
Clark: Alright
but we need to talk about this.
Lois: We
will but later. Right now I need a shower and I get first dibs.
Before Lois can blink Clark is gone in a blur and a
moment later steps back into the living room a towel wrapped around his waist
and his hair damp. She sighs in exasperation.
Lois: I
just can’t win with you can I?
Clark grins smugly.
Clark: Nope.
Clark turns toward the apartment window to soak up the
sunrays and seeing her opportunity Lois reaches forward and snatches Clarks
towel from around his waist before he can react. We get a millisecond glimpse
of the buns of steel before in a blur of motion the towel is once again wrapped
around Clark’s waist. Lois snorts in frustration.
Lois: I
give up.
Lois turns and walks to the shower while Clark
continues to stand and soak in the sun.
SCENE 9:
The food deck of the JLHQ. J’onn and the alien are seated
at a rectangular table in the centre of the room. The alien is hungrily
consuming food off of a plate in front of him and talking to J’onn in between
mouthfuls.
J’onn: My
name is J’onn.
The alien says something indistinguishable.
J’onn: Could you please repeat that? The
computer still needs some more samples of your language to create and accurate
translation matrix.
The
Alien: My name is Lenn Lann.
J’onn: Thankyou. This is the planet
Earth. What is the name of your world?
Lenn
Lann: Krypt-An
J’onn
blinks in surprise.
J’onn: The name of your world is
Krypt-An?
Lenn
Lann: Yes.
J’onn
blinks in surprise again.
J’onn: That did not go through the
translation matrix.
Lenn
Lann: No. I now possess the
rudiments of your language partly due to our mental contact yesterday and also
as a result of conversing with you for the last several hours.
J’onn: I’m surprised you picked up the
language so quickly.
Lenn
Lann: It is an extremely primitive
language. Compared to the language of my world it is almost childish.
J’onn: That is what I thought as well
when I first arrived on Earth.
Lenn
Lann: You are not from this world?
J’onn: No I am not.
Lenn
Lann: And the man who looked like a
member of my species who departed so strangely?
J’onn: He also is not from Earth
although he does bear the same physical characteristics as the native species
called humans. I am intrigued by the name of your world.
Lenn
Lann: A rough translation of it’s
meaning would be Old Mother in the language of Earth.
J’onn: Would the name Krypt-On mean
anything to you?
Lenn
Lann shrugs.
Lenn
Lann: In the language of my world
that would translate roughly into New Mother but the name means nothing to me.
J’onn: Enlightening as this conversation
is proving to be I believe it is time I contacted my friend the man you saw
yesterday.
Lenn
Lann looks up intently his interest piqued.
Lenn
Lann: I was curious about the manner
of his departure –
J’onn: I think I’ll leave it to him to
explain it to you. If you’ll excuse me I’ll contact him now.
Lenn
Lann: By all means.
J’onn stands and departs the room leaving Lenn Lann sitting at the table a thoughtful expression on his face as his food grows cold.
